Registration is now open for the Ocean Commotion 5K hosted by Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME). In its eighth year, this annual event is a fundraiser for MMoME’s work to respond to stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in southern and midcoast Maine, care for sick, injured, and abandoned seals from all over New England, study east coast marine mammal populations, and educate about global marine mammal conservation.
This dog-friendly event will take place on Saturday, October 15 at the Hermit Island Campground in Phippsburg, Maine and offers a professionally chip-timed event, timed and untimed walking options, and a one-mile kids fun run. The course takes runners, joggers, walkers, and their canine companions along trails by the ocean, offering stunning coastal and fall scenery and freedom from traffic noise.
In addition to the 5K, the event offers an opportunity to learn more about marine mammals and a raffle that includes offerings ranging from gifts for people and pets as well as outings and experiences from several local businesses. Supporters who are not in the area can also participate in the festivities by taking part in the virtual 5K Every Day Challenge, which occurs October 9-15 wherever participants are located. Virtual participants are encouraged to walk, run, hike, bike, swim, paddle or participate in any activity that amounts to a 5K each day of the challenge.
The cost for the in-person event is $25 per person (same-day registration fees increase) and $10 for the virtual event. Proceeds from all events benefit Marine Mammals of Maine.
